Petralona cave

Petralona Cave is one of the most important prehistoric caves in Greece, located in western Halkidiki at the foothills of Mount Katsika, around 50 km from Thessaloniki. Discovered in 1959, the cave is famous for its impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations, as well as important prehistoric discoveries, including a human cranium and thousands of archaeological and fossil remains. The cave covers more than 10,000 m² and has revealed fossils from over 50 animal species and more than 1,500 Paleolithic stone tools. A museum next to the cave presents the archaeological and anthropological discoveries of the site.
